Sincere words?

"Forgive me if you can"

Whether said in person, over the phone, or SMS... what do these words really mean?
Forgive me if you can...

What if I can't?
Then it doesn't really matter to me if you forgive me or not, I just thought I'd ask you to forgive me everything I did wrong, or if I hurt you..
If you don't forgive me, too bad, my life definitely will move on, and in fact, has moved on...
If you do forgive me, good for you, good for me

Did you ever ask the question, "Can you forgive me?" or "Can you ever forgive me?" or "Will you forgive me?"
No, you didn't. You didn't think about it, you don't really care. So, it doesn't matter if I forgive or not. You can deal with it the Day you will be asked about it. And that Day, I'll be busy asking for my own forgiveness.

Does it really matter now if someone who wrongs another does not ask for forgiveness or if it is not sincere.

Forgiving them is for your own good. A hadith mentioned that a man was of paradise just because he forgave everyone every night before he slept. Would you not want someone to forgive you if you wronged them, then forgive others

"Pardon (people) and overlook (their faults). Don't you love that Allah should forgive you." (24:22)

"(The dutiful are) . . . those who restrain their anger and pardon people. Allah loves those who do good to others." (3:134)

"Whenever they (true believers) are angry they forgive." (42:37)

"The recompense of evil is punishment like it. But whoever forgives (an evil committed against himself) and amends (matters), his reward is with Allah. . . . Whoever is patient and forgives, that is a matter of great resolution." (42:40, 43)

Yeps, I know these verses.
I know there's only good in forgiveness, and it puts you above the other person.
But sometimes, it becomes important to know the sincerety of such words.
Long story :)

Did you find the hadith or the verse where it says:
if you hurt or offend someone, that person has to forgive you.
