Coincidence blend

Today, I made the wackiest tea drink ever and I named it the Coincidence Blend. It's a blend of a special Pakistani tea and Ethiopian tea spice.

The reason why it's a coincidence is because, my mother made some Kashmiri tea for my brother because he requested her to (exam cravings I believe) and instead of making regular tea to find out how it tastes with the Ethiopian tea spice mix which my father brought back today, I added it to the pink tea that she made.

Don't ask me how many cups of that I've had (and I'm not a tea drinker)! But when you have pistachios, almonds, rose water, tea spice, sugar, milk and Pakistani green tea (or Kashmiri chai) all in one... it can make you high! I have to say, you are missing out! Unless if you're in town a few weeks from now because I'm seriously thinking of throwing a tea party.

I spent an hour in the internet searching for the ingredients of the tea spice without any luck. Anyone know?

Egg crisis!

Eggs have disappeared off the shelves of all major super markets in Al Ain. I don't know the situation in other cities, and I'm too lazy to research. You can check out Gulf News.com or Khaleej Times.com.
A tray of large eggs used to cost 12 dhs. A few days ago, the price had doubled to 26 dhs. And I asked my father today, it's upto 29, and eggs are still hard to find!

I hope this scarcity is temporary. The reason is cases of bird flu in India and Saudi Arabia. Local production isn't enough to meet the demands.

On an unrelated note, my mother collected the vegetable waste in the evening so that my father could give it to the neighbours to feed their hens. I didn't know hens eat vegetables.

Today however, we went to Buraimi for some errands. For all you Al Ain-ers lost without eating their eggs, the cost of the tray across the border is only 18dhs, and they are available!

Go get 'em!

Email addiction

On my way back from Dubai today I was marking assignments in the car on my laptop. And since I had been away all day from email, I walked up the stairs with my laptop checking my email until I got to my room.
This is really bad. I tried to limit checking my emails every 6 hours, but it didn't last too long. I wasn't this bad until I started working for Ansar Financial on the Islamic Finance conference...
Those were crazy days. I'd wake up between 2-3am almost daily just to check my email.

But it's because I DO get that many emails! And I have to keep track of 5 timezones (business hours). I love the global aspect of my life, but I absolutely don't love the loss of routine.

Can the addiction be any worse? Tell me I'm not the only one!
Yea, you can also tell me I need a life and I'd believe it!

Amidst other posts

I want to write up the reviews on the 5-6 books that I had read upto Ramadan. Plus there's a Matters of the Rock post that needs to be published. I just packed up my books for tomorrow. I've never used all these books in the same week, let alone a day! But inshallah I hope to study lots tomorrow (and me not being the type of person who ever studies, that's very ambitious).

Two weeks ago, when my brother and I were driving back from Baniyas on a Thursday, he did something that's left a great impression on my mind. It's quite amazing how Rizwan's intuition has developed, and more amazing how he puts it into action.

A young girl in her school uniform was trying to cross the road. She was on our left. There was another driver on our right just ahead of us by a few feet. Everything happened within 15-30 seconds. The driver swerved a bit into our lane and back. Rizwan could see the driver from his driver's seat, but I couldn't. Instantaneously, Rizwan sped up and honked like crazy. I reacted and almost shouted @ him to stop honking, and let the other guy drive as he wills. He ignored me, and drove ahead. He kept looking in the rear view mirror of the car and finally said, "Idiot!"
I asked him, "What happened? If a car's ahead of you, you should let it choose the lane. Why did you speed up?"
And he goes, "didn't you see what happened?! You're so stupid. The guy was going after the girl. After this, he's never ever going to go after the girl again". He made a mental note of the license plate number in case he'd ever meet him again.

I was quite impressed. It's not the first time my brother has taken a stance like that. He's always very vocal when it comes to gender issues and people crossing their limits. And Rehan's like that as well. I remember when a series of assaults happened on campus, Rehan sent my friends an email with something like: "Dear Bajis, please be careful on campus. I'm your official escort and you can call me anytime."
My friends talked about it for months!

Missing Blogger Update

Some people are rather disturbed about the missing blogger, hence we decided to give a short update. Aside from people driving her crazy, the other major cause of her disappearance is, a sudden realisation of what she's really upto.
To illustrate rather vividly:

Actually, that wasn't a vivid enough illustration.
What's happening on weekends is rather interesting. Between 5:30 and 8 both days she has Shariah program class. However, 6-7 on both days, she has to TA courses on SunniPath. Which means that she misses 2 hours of her Arabic lessons, and hence has to listen to 5 hrs of recording each week. Plus, one of the courses she TAs is actually both days as well, but she skips one hour because Alhamdulillah there's another TA on the course who attends that hour, so that's another hour of recording to catch up with. Let's not even talk about the recordings from last semester she wanted to catch up on during Ramadan but never got around to...

Besides her 2 halaqas, and (bi)weekly Tuesday evening meetings, she's working on writing articles, proof-reading some literature for Ghazali.org, organising CAMP's chapter and an overwhelming amount of leadership summit organisational work. So she decided to book off time for sleeping on her schedule before she forgets to do that (which of course is an exaggeration).

At this point, this is all the information we have. Stay tuned!

Blogger disappeared!

Through unconfirmed sources, it has come to our notice that the owner of this blog is missing (or perhaps, pretending to be missing). It is rumoured that certain individuals tried to drive her crazy and she's recovering from that.
Rest assured, we are working on finding her!

I am Little Red Hiding Hood

Everyone's been asking me about Little Red Riding Hood. It started with Shariq, a student in the Arabic course I TAed on sunnipath, asking me if I knew that my name means The Little Red one. That reminded me of Little Red Riding Hood. And then today on our way to Jabel Hafeet, Jeewan told me to look up this video:

My name means redness, or the little red one.
I can be an Arabic verb
or the Little Red Riding Hood in Hoodwinked.
My name was Aisha (ra)'s nickname given to her by the Prophet (pbuh).
And I wish I was the Little Red Riding Hood struggling for my brothers and sisters.

Winnie the Pooh! Part II

A couple others from Winnie-the-Pooh's Little Book of Friendship The secret of Pooh's social success:

Sharing Secrets

Pooh looked around to see that nobody else was listening, and said in a very solemn voice. "Piglet, I have decided something."
"What have you decided, Pooh?"
"I have decided to catch a Heffalump".

Know Your Friends

"Eeyore", he said solemnly.
"I, Winnie the Pooh, will find your tail for you".
"Thank you Pooh", said Eeyore.
"You're a real friend", said he.

Lamhein

Aisay mor tau sab ki zindagi mein aatein he hein, lekin jab raaton ko neend na aye, pani ki talab ho, aur kaanch ki tarha har soch chubh ne lagay...
dil o demag me ittefaq na rahe...
har aahat ki awaz se rongtay kharay ho jaein...
na saheeh ka ehsaas, na apne khayalon par yaqeen
na zindagi ke is paar koi rah, na us paar
apne chote hone ki sharam, har lamhe ke saath barhti hui
khaali khaali jahaan
tab mango-passion fruit ka juice piyo yaar!

------------------------------
There Hafsa, try reading it in Urdu with my 100 spelling errors ;) Perhaps Hammad or Sheepoo can help me correct them :P This was fun.. I've been trying to bring my Arabic typing upto speed, thought I'd give Urdu a shot too!

Maryam

The name Maryam has come to be associated with many other not-so-Maryam-like meanings. My friends or aunts who have babies or toddlers named Maryam will surely agree.

There's one Maryam who's almost 3 years old now, who is the boss of her house. To anything her mom says, she always replies, "That's right mom!". Her mom calls her The Terminator and it's an extremely difficult task to take her to someone's place. Hence, this Maryam is mostly @ home, entertaining guests in cute lil pink frocks with matching bows. And if she likes you, she'll even feed you! Oh, and she looks equally gorgeous in her red chinese dress, complete with red slippers and a fan. Sigh.

Then there's Maryam who questions the scholars. She often goes to the mosque with her parents, and once, at Asr, after the Imam said, "God is great", in the loudest voice Maryam could muster, this 2 and a half year old started reciting her Fatiha. A few people shifted, trying to shush her up, but there was no stopping Maryam. Later, at home, her mother asked her, "Maryam, why did you embarass mommy like that? What would the Imam sahab have thought of you? "
"But mummy, the Imam forgot to read the Fatiha, and I was just helping him"

Maryam, who's just 3, and a regular visitor to my place, never fails to let everyone know she's in charge. Whether it's wearing other aunties' sandals and walking in them, or unlocking one of our 5 exit doors, or bounding up and down the stairs, she's always high on energy, mashallah. I'm always looking for excuses to invite her over. She climbs on to every chair there is to grab anything within her reach. Actually, that's what Maryam does best- balancing herself on a chair with one foot, tugging on to objects with a hand, and waving with the other. The other foot is generally suspended in air.

And let's not talk about Maryam my mother sends upstairs to wake me up in the mornings when she's visiting. She's as loud as my alarm clock and will have me on the floor in a matter of minutes if I don't get up. And then she'll pretend as if she was reading a book.

oh.. and Maryam who's so cute all over but she mostly clings on to her mother in the presence of strangers. We had a surprise party for a friend, and everyone sat down to eat. Amidst all the conversations, you hear a little voice saying, "Bismillah..." at the head of the table. It's Maryam, who's sitting in her mother's lap, ready to have her dinner.

:)

Boldly Defying all Expectations

Tariq, this one's for you!

First came the 4 fingers, and then the 2, and then every variation possible, bringing the global world together, from Kit Kat Green Tea in Japan, Kit Kat Strawberry in Canada to Kit Kat Orange in UK and Kit Kat Chunky White in The Netherlands.

No complicated fusions of nuts, rice, caramel or nougat, just a simple, plain wafer and lovely, cocoa-y milk chocolate.
From the first dense and crispy bite, the subtle combination of tastes makes this bar a unique and fascinating snacking experience. The classic pairing of wafer and milk chocolate in a regular Kit Kat bar is a guaranteed winner in its perfect counterpoint of textures and taste. Adding other flavours to the mix is simply a bold and brazen risk that ends up working on so many levels.
The finger size allows the full flavour spectrum of the chocolate wafers to manifest itself in a truly wonderful way.
Kit Kat chocolate never becomes overwhelming or distracting. The balance of taste lets the cinnamon or the orange or the mint or any other flavour dance across the palette in a taunting, teasing way, until it finally settles in its rich, satisfying aftertaste.

Arguably, it is a different type of product, more biscuit than chocolate bar, making you feel slightly more virtuous if you have one with a cup of tea! It still does contain around 250 calories though, so it is not quite as virtuous as it seems ;)

Any review of Kit Kat would not be complete without a mention of their enduring slogan, “Have a Break”. This has been the subject of many different adverts over the years – my favourite being the one with the roller skating pandas (anyone remember it?!)

Couldn't sleep

Most days I sleep before 12, and get up by 3:30-4am, just before fajr.
I have to run a few errands in a bit, but mummy told me to take a nap between 9-10:30am.

I had milk @ 5am, a conference call meeting @ 5:30am, spoke with Hafsa around 6:30am.
Woke up my brother for work after 7, ironed his shirt, and graded assignments until about 8:30am.
I went downstairs, washed some dishes and had breakfast with my father, that's when mummy suggested I take a nap because I had to for 11am, pick up my sister's friend and drop both of them for tuitions (not to mention search for the place since her teacher moved last week) and then take mummy to the doctor first, pick up some grocery and then to the dentist. I had to exchange a book myself.
I came back upstairs and spend about 10 minutes trying to get my sister out of bed. Did some work on my laptop and then @ 9:16, told her to wake me up at 10:20.

But, I couldn't sleep because....

What if I'm not able to wake up on time?
I hope mummy's ready on time so that my sister isn't late...
Oh dear, I've to type up the meeting minutes from today morning's meeting...
I'm glad my friend liked my gift that she received in the mail today...
And when am I going to study for my midterm that's due by Saturday?
Listening to 5 lessons should be a problem...
I never got that email from my team on the conference, I should follow up
Thank goodness I finished grading the assignments, they always take forever...
I have to practice verb tables for tomorrow's class.
Still haven't called up my friend to tell her I want to throw a party for her before she leaves for India to get married
I better schedule completing my hajj account for next week
Should I go swimming tomorrow?
What was her phone number? 8231966...Alhamdulillah, didn't forget!
Oh man, why can't I sleep!
I wish I didn't have to take the Kia today, it's no fun driving that car anymore
I wonder if my sister had breakfast? Did mummy go to sleep?
I didn't iron my clothes I'm going to wear... should I even sleep?
I should also study for my exam on Sunday sometime today since it's going to be quite intense...

Perhaps, reading a book will help, I might still be able to get 1/2 hour of sleep. I grabbed the Robert Fisk book. In retrospect, I should've grabbed the other book, The Tipping Point, since the pages I read were on prison torture during the Shah's regime in Iran. How horrible.
All of a sudden, my phone rang, and what do you know, a wrong number. Well, at least it pulled me away from the book.

I still have 22 minutes, if I really want to catch a quick nap...
