More on the Gulf Cup

... the victory gets bigger and bigger!

All traffic rules were broken yesterday on Shaikh Zayed Road as football fans
went wild celebrating the Gulf Cup win with their home team.

The Emirates Post has promised the UAE national football team a mammoth Dh2 million as bonus if they win the 18th Gulf Cup championship.

DUBAI — His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has granted a villa each to the members of the UAE soccer team that won the Gulf Cup for the first time since the championship kicked off over 30 years ago.

The concept of being rewarded monetarily for playing sports for your country is quite unique to the Middle East. Athletes in North America make little or no money when participating in sports at the world-level for their country. It is something they are willing and proud to do without any compensation. However, athletes in North America are making millions anyways, so I don’t think the extra pay cut hurts anyways … ok, so I dunno what side I took on this rant ;-)

Dude, this victory is first time in 30 yrs. Naturally, that's a big win. It's not as if they get this kinda money every few years :)
I'm sure athletes everywhere do it for their country... like Pakistani cricketers for example..
